Clan MacAlister Society, Ltd. and MacAlister Clansmen worldwide morn the passing a great Scot and benefactor, Laird Glenbarr, Angus McAllister of Glenbarr, Western Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland.
Angus quietly succumbed to his long fight with cancer on April 4, 2007, at 10pm. He was at home in his beloved Glenbarr Abbey with Lady Jeanne Macalister at his side. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Laird Glenbarr in an effort to preserve Glenbarr Abbey, and to ensure that his family heritage was not lost to history like so many other Scottish Nobel Houses, gave Glenbarr Abbey, the ancestral home, to Clan MacAlister as the MacAlister Clan Center. Glenbarr Abbey was placed into the ownership of Clan MacAlister through the Scottish National Trust in 1984. Its operation will be overseen be the Board of Trustees which is made up of MacAlister Clansmen from Scotland, America and Australia. While Lady Jeanne Macalister will continue keep Glenbarr Abbey open to the public the responsibilities for maintaining Glenbarr Abbey will now, in part, fall on MacAlister’s worldwide. |

The Clan MacAlister is an offshoot of the great Clan Donald. One of its first leaders was Alasdair Mor, younger son of Donald of the Isles, a grandson of Somerled, who was killed in Ireland in 1299. The Clan played a prominent part in the often turbulent history of Western Scotland and Ireland. Glenbarr Abbey was formerly presented to the clan in September, 1984, by its owner and present occupier, Angus C.Macalister, 5th Laird of Glenbarr, as a Clan Centre. He is also the representer of the ancient and noble House of Macalister of Glenbarr. "Clan" was the name applied to a group of kinsmen united under a chief and claiming common ancestry. They lived as one great family on the lands they possessed. The clansmen or septs, branches, supported their chief with remarkable loyalty. |
